Grid Stability and Power Converter Technology

Our research question

How can power converters and drives, electrical grids and their operating equipment be further developed and controlled so that power systems function stably, efficiently and safely?

Our strengths

  • Analysis and control methods for grids, power converters and drives
  • Modeling of power systems, generation plants and network resources
  • Parallel operation of distributed power converters in the grid
  • Test center for interconnected, micro and island grids
  • Special laboratories for power converters and electric drives
  • Cooperation in the international laboratory network DERlab

Research fields

  • Grid stability, control and protection in converter-dominated grids
  • Development, control and modeling of power converters and electrical machines
  • Grid connection and test procedures for generation systems
  • Rapid prototyping systems and measurement techniques for power converter development
  • Hardware-in-the-loop and software-in-the-loop systems

In the research field "Grid Stability and Power Converter Technology", we conduct research on the following topics and work on projects for practical application:

Analysis and control methods for converter-dominated grids

Our researchers are working, among other things, on the design and development of new approaches, methods and tools for grid control, grid dynamics and grid protection in converter-dominated transmission and distribution grids.

Technologies to increase efficiency and reduce costs

Research is being conducted on technologies that increase availability and efficiency as well as reduce the cost and material of components and the overall system. The use of new materials for power electronics, the activation of measurement and control technology combined with appropriate ICT for converter-coupled systems can help reduce costs and increase reliability while maintaining performance.
