Research Project Bio-CO2

Provision of CO2 from biogas upgrading plants for material use

The overall objective of the project "Provision of CO2 from biogas upgrading plants for material use" is to increase the efficiency of biogas upgrading plants by significantly reducing emissions and improving profitability.

The project aims to identify new revenue opportunities for operators of biogas upgrading plants through the production and marketing of CO2 in addition to biomethane. CO2 from biogas is a sustainably produced CO2, since organic molecules are used as the carbon source, which in turn is CO2 that was removed from the atmosphere during the last growth periods.

The conceptual approach described in this project is thus based on a plant "carbon capture process" and specifically addresses its "utilization". Overall, this approach of extending the removal of carbon from the atmosphere can be referred to as "TCCU: Temporary Carbon Capture and Utilization".

The goal of the project is to:

  • Determine economically optimized supply chains for CO2 from biogas.
  • Ecological evaluation of the supply chains for CO2 from biogas
  • Development of business models for the combined production and marketing of biomethane and CO2 for material use from biogas upgrading plants.
  • Preparation of a guideline as a handout for plant operators and project developers
