Energy Management and ISO 50001 at Fraunhofer IEE

Using Energy Efficiently and Responsibly

As a research institute dedicated to the transformation of the energy system, it focuses on energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainable infrastructure. The institute applies these principles to its own operations as well: buildings, technical systems, and processes are to be operated as energy-efficiently and resource-conserving as possible.

Using our energy management system, which is certified according to DIN EN ISO 50001:2018, we systematically track and analyze our energy consumption. Based on this data, we identify opportunities for efficiency, develop appropriate measures, and continuously improve our energy performance.

In this way, we ensure transparency regarding the institute’s energy use while also contributing to the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s climate strategy.

Our Principles of Energy Management

Continuous Improvement

We regularly review our energy performance and continuously refine our energy management system. A structured improvement process forms the basis for this.

Transparency Through Energy Monitoring

We continuously track and analyze our institute’s energy consumption and major energy consumers. The data we collect helps us identify potential savings and assess the impact of implemented measures.

Energy-Efficient System Operation

We examine the operating times and utilization rates of technical systems and adjust them as needed. This includes, for example, optimizing ventilation systems as well as regularly inspecting and adjusting heating systems.

Sustainable Institute Operations

We combine technical innovations with operational optimizations. Our goal is to operate buildings, systems, and processes in a way that is energy-efficient and resource-conserving over the long term.

Reliable Processes

Clear responsibilities, regular inspections, and continuous quality assurance help us reliably manage and further develop energy-related processes.

Sharing Experiences

As an active member of the Fraunhofer Society, Fraunhofer IEE collaborates with other Fraunhofer Institutes to exchange ideas on effective measures for increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The insights gained from these exchanges are incorporated into the further development of our energy management system.

The energy management system helps us plan efficiency measures for the long term, implement them in a targeted manner, and evaluate their impact. The focus is particularly on:

  • the continuous recording and analysis of energy consumption,
  • the identification of major energy consumers,
  • the optimization of operating hours and equipment utilization,
  • quality assurance for energy-related processes,
  • the long-term planning and evaluation of efficiency measures.

This creates a continuous process that allows us to ensure transparency in the Institute’s energy use and systematically identify further savings potential.

Contribution to the Fraunhofer Society's Climate Strategy

This certification is a key component of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s climate strategy. The strategy calls for the gradual implementation of an ISO 50001-compliant energy management system across all institutes.

Through our energy management efforts, we combine scientific work with institutional responsibility: We develop solutions for the energy transition while simultaneously committing to applying its principles within our own institute’s operations.
