Research Project ELISE

Collaborative Project: ELISE

Development of nacelle-lidar-based methods for performance monitoring and yield optimization of wind farms in complex terrain; Subproject: Development of a turbulence correction for nacelle-lidar measurements

Increasing the Performance of Wind Turbines in Complex Terrain

Optimizing existing wind turbines is of central importance for further increasing the share of wind power in Germany. Especially in complex terrain, actual and forecasted yields often differ. Precise follow-up measurements are necessary to analyze yield shortfalls in a targeted manner and to derive appropriate countermeasures. Since the site calibration using measurement masts that has been required to date is time-consuming and costly, the collaborative project is developing a nacelle-lidar-based method for measuring power characteristics that can be implemented much more efficiently and cost-effectively.

Gondola lidar and wind field modeling for more accurate yield analyses

As the coordinator of the collaborative project, Fraunhofer IEE is focusing on the further development of methods for determining turbulence intensity using nacelle lidar. To this end, spectral and empirical approaches are combined to derive correction factors under various environmental conditions. In addition, wind field modeling in complex terrain is being further developed to more accurately represent wind conditions and better understand the causes of yield variations.
