Research Project GFI-Pilot

GFI-Pilot – Piloting of Grid-Forming Converters in the Distribution Grid

In order to accelerate the expansion of renewable energy and ensure system stability, it is necessary to obtain operating experience from pilot projects with grid-forming inverters as quickly as possible.

The Fraunhofer IEE in Kassel is therefore partnering with TEAG Thüringer Energie AG, TEN Thüringer Energienetze AG, TU Braunschweig, P&M Power Consulting GmbH, Vattenfall Wasserkraft GmbH and others in the “GFI Pilot” project to prove the stable operation of grid-forming battery storage systems distributed in the high-voltage grid as well as their contribution to instantaneous reserve and grid restoration through field tests in a high-voltage sub-grid.
