SET Hub Pilot 4 – Development of an AI-based control algorithm for building technology in non-residential buildings in conjunction with intelligent control systems

In the SET Hub Pilot 4 project, the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology (IEE) is working on developing an AI-based control algorithm to optimize building technology in non-residential buildings. The goal of the project is to increase the efficiency and flexibility of energy use in these buildings through intelligent control systems and to promote their integration as active prosumers in the energy market. In collaboration with partners Smartrplace GmbH and Teleseo GmbH, an innovative approach is being pursued, which is based on reinforcement learning methods. The AI models are trained in a cloud environment, while the actual control of the AI agent takes place in a decentralized manner via an edge device in the building. A key component of the project is the integration of smart metering systems (SMGW) for high-frequency data collection and analysis of energy consumption. These systems are crucial for implementing dynamic tariffs and for transmitting grid-oriented performance limitations according to §14a of the Energy Industry Act (EnWG). By utilizing the AI agent and SMGW technology, an optimized control of energy systems is enabled that serves both the market and the grid. The pilot project includes both simulation-based laboratory tests and practical field trials, which are being conducted in the Fraunhofer IEE’s institute building. The integrated energy systems, including heat pumps, charging stations, and photovoltaic systems, serve as a testbed for evaluating the developed solutions. The insights gained are intended to promote the application of smart metering systems and artificial intelligence, as well as address potential challenges in grid- and market-oriented control in non-residential buildings.
