Korea VPP
Korean 500MW+ Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Demonstration
This multi-year project will demonstrate large-scale aggregation and optimal dispatch of distributed energy resources (DERs) in Korea—500MW and beyond—using adaptive AI and agent-based algorithms inspired by German VPP commercialization. Across four years, partners will: define ISO–DSO–VPP roles and technical requirements; design prototypes for communication, optimization, and policy foundations; complete core technologies and small-scale pilots; and deliver a 500MW+ demonstration with clear policy recommendations. Key outcomes include technical standards and protocols, comprehensive benefit analysis, and ready-to-use algorithms, databases, software, models, and test procedures to strengthen ISO–DSO–VPP interconnection.
Fraunhofer IEE’s role
- Provide European policy and regulatory insights on DERs and ancillary services.
- Review draft technical standards and verification frameworks; recommend improvements.
- Support conceptual design of information-sharing, communication/control protocols, and AI-based grid stabilization algorithms in line with compliance requirements.
- Peer-review and enhance dispatch algorithms, protocols, and security technologies developed by project partners.
- Advise on resource configuration for the 500MW+ demonstration in Korea.
- Conduct the final review of all deliverables and contribute operational expertise from Germany during the demonstration.
