Doctorate or bilateral doctorate at Fraunhofer IEE

Doing a PhD with Fraunhofer IEE

The well-structured PhD program of Fraunhofer IEE offers a solid framework for excellent PhD conditions. The program can be started after successful acceptance of the doctoral topic at a university and an agreement with those involved at Fraunhofer IEE.

This includes a guideline for the doctoral period, personal supervision by our scientists at the institute and neutral contact persons who can be contacted in all matters concerning the doctorate. Furthermore, the program includes regular seminars for PhD students on career and self-management, publication and communication.

Bilateral doctorate at Fraunhofer IEE

Cooperation model of science and practice via selected knowledge carriers

A bilateral doctorate offers the opportunity for doctoral candidates to independently transfer current issues from industry to research, to further develop and answer them using scientific methods in an independent research context - and finally to return to the application in the company. In this way, doctoral students become knowledge carriers for a selected topic and thus have a key position for the company and the research institute.

The basis for such a bilateral doctorate is a high level of trust between the doctoral student, the company and the research institution. The work for the doctorate is carried out within the framework of a cooperative project between the company and Fraunhofer IEE with the possibility of a doctorate in a working group at the institute. It should be noted that parts of the joint work must be made public in the doctoral thesis.

At Fraunhofer IEE, the bilateral doctorate is embedded in the institute's doctoral program. The doctoral candidates therefore enjoy all the benefits of the program as well as the obligations to fulfill the tasks and comply with good scientific practice. In the case of a dual doctorate, the doctoral candidates are simultaneously employees of Fraunhofer IEE and the contracting company. If possible, half of the employment should take place at the institute and half at the company. The duration of the doctorate is three years.
