CGMES (Common Grid Model Exchange Standard) is an international standard developed by ENTSO-E that standardizes the exchange of grid models in the energy sector. It defines how electrical grids—including their topology, assets, and time series—are structured and described.

 

CGMES enables grid operators, service providers, and simulation tools to exchange consistent models, which facilitates collaboration, enhances interoperability, and supports regulatory requirements for transparency and grid planning. In many European processes, CGMES thus forms the basis for reliable load flow calculations, security analyses, and grid expansion planning.
