StoREin: Energy Storage for Renewable Energy Integration in India

Research Project StoREin

StoREin - Energy Storage for Renewable Energy Integration in India

The “Energy Storage for Renewable Energy Integration in India (StoREin)” project has the overarching goal of advancing India’s energy transition and contributing to the country’s climate goals by addressing the challenges associated with integrating renewable energy. The project focuses on increasing storage capacity in the distribution grid, creating a favorable regulatory framework, and implementing technical solutions for the deployment of economically viable storage systems. By supporting the efficient use of renewable energy generation through appropriate storage solutions, StoREin aims to improve the resource efficiency of the overall system and reduce the environmental impact caused by fossil fuels.

The project aims to overcome existing economic barriers and knowledge gaps in the field of decentralized storage systems. This is to be achieved by strengthening the policy framework, demonstrating financial feasibility in pilot applications, and building knowledge and capacity among key stakeholders. Furthermore, StoREin enhances the power grid’s ability to manage large volumes of fluctuating renewable energy using decentralized energy solutions—supported by technical studies and the development of practical tools.

Fraunhofer IEE will primarily contribute to the development of research studies and models focusing on applications of decentralized storage systems and their integration into the Indian power grid. Another priority is the establishment of German-Indian R&D networks.

In addition, Fraunhofer will collaborate with the other project partners to support the increased use of renewable energy in India through knowledge transfer and capacity-building measures.
