Project Description

In SupraGenSys 2, the demonstrator is to be developed on the basis of an optimised 10 MW full HTS (high temperature superconductivity) generator. This requires extensive calculations as well as the design and construction of the corresponding subsystems until everything finally comes together in the demonstrator and the concept of a full HTS generator can be tested and tried out. This requires close cooperation between the consortium, which has already proven itself in SupraGenSys and has been expanded for SupraGenSys 2 due to its potential.

The knowledge gained in the design, construction and operation of the demonstrator is to be incorporated into the optimised generator design. Therefore, it is planned to continuously develop the calculation tools during the project. This is the only way to ensure that design-related changes (e.g. bore holes, ...) are taken into account in the electromagnetic design and that their influence is made transparent. This applies not only to the electromagnetic design, but also to the design of the passive parts of the generator, such as the support structure or bearing, and the developed cooling concepts including the design of the cryostat. When realising the converter for the demonstrator, standard hardware should be used if possible, which is also suitable for continuous operation.

Fraunhofer IEE is participating in the overall SupraGrenSys 2 project by working on the electromagnetic design of the demonstrator, the corresponding design of the components and the design of the overall system. Furthermore, the demonstrator is to be set up at the Fraunhofer IEE in the MS-HIL laboratory (Medium Voltage Hardware in the Loop laboratory) and tested for its efficiency and usability.

In order to achieve the goal of the overall project, Fraunhofer IEE will work on the following sub-goals in a leading role or together with the consortium:

  • Project management of the overall project and organisation of the industrial working group.
  • The electromagnetic rough and fine design of the fully superconducting generator as a demonstrator and as a large generator Development of calculation tools to accompany the design and determination of transient effects in the electromagnetic design.
  • Organisation of the construction of the test stand from procurement, planning of the sensor technology to the operation management strategy
  • Commissioning and carrying out measurements on the demonstrator
  • Further development of the design tool from SupraGenSys 1
  •  Investigation of the feasibility of full-HTS generators for wind power on the basis of studies
